Designing for Zero Waste
How might we advance the development of a community-led resource recovery park in south Baltimore?

strategizing for impact
As a fellow of the Sustainable Design Practicum at Johns Hopkins University, our multi-disciplinary team worked alongside the South Baltimore Community Land Trust to leverage our city’s anchor institutions towards the development of a local resource recovery park. Beginning with composting infrastructure, this envisioned facility would divert 40% of waste from the current incinerator waste stream and begin shifting our city’s waste management towards an equitable zero-waste system. Centering the community standards for operating excellence, we organized several interventions that put pressure on power to act justly and bolstered relationships of support for the cause.
